About the Games

The Mey Highland Games have been a highlight of the Caithness summer calendar since 1970, celebrating Scotland’s Highland traditions, sporting heritage and strong sense of community. Established by the late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother during her time at the Castle of Mey, the Games continue to enjoy a special royal connection, with His Majesty King Charles III serving as Chieftain of the Games and attending regularly during his annual summer visit to Caithness.

What to Expect

The Games offer a fantastic day of traditional Highland entertainment, with competitors taking part in exciting heavy events including caber tossing, hammer throwing and weight competitions, alongside track and field events, Highland dancing, solo piping and massed pipe bands. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of stalls, refreshments and entertainment throughout the grounds. Whether you are a local resident or visiting the far north of Scotland, the Mey Highland Games provide a memorable celebration of Highland culture, community and tradition for all ages.

The Mey Highland Games take place at the John O’Groats Showground, just a short distance from the famous John O’Groats landmark on the northern coast of Caithness. Surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of the far north, the setting provides a fitting backdrop for one of Scotland’s most distinctive Highland gatherings.
